Mary A. Hayes

Narrative: Dr. Mary Hayes has spent her professional career as an educator, first working as a secondary school chemistry and foreign language instructor, transferring to higher education in the late 1970’s. She taught at the Phillips Graduate Institute in Encino, California, Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas and the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she is a Professor Emerita and continues to teach in the Graduate School of Professional Psychology. Dr. Hayes is a Health Practitioner holding licenses to practice psychology and marriage and family therapy in Minnesota. Her practice is limited to supervision which is her major research interest. Her past appointments include the Minnesota Board of Marriage and Family Therapy and the AMFTRB where she now is a content expert. She received her M.A. and Ph.D. from The University of Southern California, Ed.S. and M.A. from the University of Minnesota and B.A. from St. Catherine University. Dr. Hayes has been honored with many awards in her field. Professional memberships include the American Family Therapy Academy, the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, the Minnesota Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and the Minnesota Psychological Association. She is active in educational charities, boards and councils in her community. Her hobbies include reading, exercise, travel, and family activities.

Work History: Dr. Hayes taught chemistry at the secondary school level for 10 years before making the move to higher education. She taught and supervised at universities in Texas and California before returning to Minnesota and the University of St. Thomas, Department of Professional Psychology from which she is now retired and serves as a Professor Emerita. Dr. Hayes served on and for some time chaired the Minnesota state regulatory board for marriage and family therapy for 19 years and the national regulatory board for many years. She was president of the national board in 2004 and 2005. Currently, Dr. Hayes participates on the Examination Construction Committee as a content expert in marital and family therapy working on the National Marital and Family Therapy Examination for the Association of Marital and Family Therapy Regulatory Board, in conjunction with the Professional Examination Service.
Career Accomplishments: Throughout the years, Dr. Hayes has made regular presentations at professional conferences and continues to do so. She is currently involved in a study on supervision with three colleagues throughout the country. From 1973 through 2005 Dr. Hayes was actively involved in the practice of psychotherapy on either a full or part time basis. On at least two occasions she has been given awards for "significant contributions to marriage and family life and family therapy" in Minnesota in addition to several other forms of recognition for both her personal and professional roles.
