Work History: Ms. Stauring was employed by the New York State Office of Mental Health (NYS OMH) for 35 years working as a Staff and Head Nurse, Utilization Review Coordinator, Nursing Instructor and Nurse Administrator. She was the Director of Nursing for 17 years until retiring in September, 2004. Ms. Stauring was the NYS OMH Director of Mental Health Nursing Services for the State of New York from 1985-1988. Prior to that, she was employed in general duty nursing from 1959-1969 at the General Hospital of Syracuse and the Community General Hospital in Syracuse, New York.
Published Works: Ms. Stauring published "Nurses' Role in Recovery" in the OMH Quarterly, March, 2001 and authored and co-authored various position papers relating to the profession of nursing, nursing legislation and OMH nursing. In addition, she co-authored for the Elmira Psychiatric Center through the New York State Department of Labor, Health Workforce Retraining Initiative, a proposal for "A Registered Nurse Training Program" which was received in January of 2004.
Career Accomplishments: Ms. Stauring feels that winning and retaining the respect of her colleagues within the NYS OMH and within the nursing community is one of her greatest career accomplishments. One of the most outstanding portions of her career was being involved in the development of a hospital from its inception, including working with the architects in the blueprint design of the facility and in developing manuals and policies where none previously existed and establishing community relationships and responding to the first placement of a psychiatric facility within the community. She recruited the core staff, educated the public on having a psychiatric hospital without fences and bars on the windows and helped dispel the myths of mental illness. Ms. Stauring believes that it has been a truly fascinating experience which provided the foundation for the rest of her career.
