Dr. Stelljes was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Tunisia, Africa in 1978. He was employed at Tetra Tech, Inc. in Bellevue, Washington from 1990-1991, Harding Lawson Associates in Novato, California from 1991-1996 and EMCON in Sacramento, California, from 1996-1997. Dr. Stelljes joined SECOR International, Inc. in Concord, California in 1997 where he remained until 2000. He began working at SLR International Corp in Martinez, California in 2000. |

Dr. Stelljes believes the major accomplishment of his career was obtaining approval for use of a new solvent from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. He reviewed over 50 toxicological studies that were conducted on the chemical, developed an occupational exposure level using state-of-the-art benchmark dose modeling and attended multiple meetings with the regulatory community on behalf of his client. The chemical was designed to replace another solvent that had been banned due to its effects on greenhouse gases. The new chemical doesn't deplete the ozone layer, therefore, is safer for the environment. In addition, the new solvent is not a carcinogen resulting in lower toxicity potential for humans. The project spanned seven years, requiring Dr. Stelljes's toxicology and communications expertise while interacting with the U.S. EPA and oversight agencies. He completed over 300 human health and ecological risk assessments and helped numerous clients solve environmental problems through the innovative use of risk assessment and his toxicology expertise. In addition, Dr. Stelljes developed occupational exposure levels for the new solvent and an internationally-recognized risk assessment and toxicology practice at SLR International. With a background in wildlife ecology, he has been able to focus on the actions of chemicals at the organism level and at larger ecological scales including populations and communities, enabling him be a more capable risk assessor compared to those with a background in chemistry, biochemistry and molecular biology or similar types of fields. Dr. Stelljes notes that his ability to effectively communicate risk assessment and toxicology to non-specialists has differentiated him in from others in his field which has has led to numerous speaking engagements and invited talks at scientific conferences and public meetings. |
